Do It Yourself Tips to Keep Mice Away

Using Mothballs To Keep Mice Away - When it comes to getting rid of mice there are countless schools of thought on what the best method is. There are many people who will tell you to place mothballs in areas you want mice to avoid. While it is true that they don’t like the scent of these mothballs once you have a mouse infestation mothballs simply aren’t strong enough to get rid of the rodents once they have discovered a source of shelter and food.

If you have an infestation of rodents mothballs aren’t going to get rid of the animals. Essentially, mothballs aren’t the best for keeping mice away. In fact, most the repellent products that are available on the market aren’t going to help you with a mouse problem. Additionally, having mice isn’t something you want to ignore because these nasty vermin carry disease and get into every part of your home. Instead of wasting your money on mothballs you should opt for any of the many lethal traps that are available. There are snap traps, lethal covered traps, glue traps and poison all of which will prove much more useful in getting rid of the problem.

Using Poison For Mice In Your Attic - There are many people who simply don’t want to have to mess around with all the different types of traps that are on the market when they find they have a mouse infestation. One of the most popular means of getting rid of mice is to put poison out. This is because it works very well and getting an infestation of mice can be an extreme health hazard. If you use poison in your attic make sure that it is out of the way so any pets that might get into it. You should also make sure to wash your hands after handling the poison.

After you have placed the poison in areas where there are signs the mice have been you’ll want to be prepared to clean up after them. This doesn’t just mean you should clean up the mouse droppings and feces but it also means you’re going to want to clean up the dead animals. Often once they have eaten the poison they will sneak further into to the attic to die. If you don’t remove the dead animals you will not only have the odor from them you will also have any diseases they can expose to.

Seal Attic Mice Out - Once you know you have mice in the attic, you want to get rid of them. It may take you a few days before you have the entire mouse family evacuated either through traps or poisons. When you are certain that there are no more mice in your attic, the next thing you want to do for future peace of mind is to seal attic mice out of your house. Get yourself a ladder and check under your eaves for any openings. If there are stretches of open slits between house and roof, be sure to seal them up so no other mice will see this opening as an invitation.

The problem is that there need to be openings around your eaves so that moisture won’t build up in your attic and rafters. The air flow will keep your attic dry but it will also provide openings to the outside. A good contractor should have placed tightly knit wire mesh around the entire roof to prevent living things from the outside to enter your attic. Perhaps this wire guard had been there but lost at some point. Be careful that you check on that every fall so that you will always be able to seal attic mice out.
